Iceland River Sog Availability

Salmon fishing in Iceland is opening soon and Sog river is recognized as one of the finest Atlantic salmon rivers in Iceland. Sog river is only 65 km east from our lovely capital Reykjavik.

Sog river is the largest spring fed river in Iceland and is renowned for its amazing bird-life, beautiful surroundings and high percentage of multi-sea-winter salmon. Also, the Sog river has a very healthy stock of Arctic char and every year char of size 6-7 pounds are caught.

The Sog Bildfell’s beat is a very productive beat and frequently produces the heaviest salmon each year on Sog river, meaning salmon of 20 pounds or bigger.

Accommodation on the Sog Bildsfell Beat is provided in a very comfortable self catering lodge beside the river. The lodge has a very well equipped kitchen for cooking, 4 twin-bedded bedrooms, three WCs & showers, dining and sitting room. Also, the lodge has a separate storage room for your waders and fishing clothing.

The salmon fishing is done with single, switch or double-handed rods using floating or intermediate lines with small to medium size flies early in the season. Most common flies are Red & Black Frances, Blue Charm, Red & Green But, Snaelda, Sunray Shadow and other traditional Icelandic flies.

Only fly fishing is allowed with a catch and release policy.

Sog river is surrounded with photoscenic areas and the most popular tourist attractions in the south of Iceland such as the volcano Mt. Hekla, lovely lava fields, Glacier Langjokull, the famous geothermal area of Geysir, the waterfall Gullfoss and the National Park at Thingvellir. It is well worth to spend a few days extra to explore these beautiful attractions.

Travel arrangements to Iceland from most cities in Europe are around three hours flying time. There are about 25 airlines that offer flights during the summer months and the earlier you book the better are the prices. You will need to arrive in Iceland one day before your fishing starts and you will depart Iceland on the morning after your fishing ends. You will receive driving directions to/from Sog river, info on where to purchase your food supplies, Icelandic fly fishing stores, etc.

Hotel and guesthouse accommodation can be arranged before and after your fishing.

I will meet and greet you on arrival in Iceland, transport you to your accommodation in Reykjavik and get you settled in properly.
