No lined trousers and skirts yes its summer, but, don’t tell the fish as they still think it’s spring time. I feel we are running a few weeks behind this season with water temperature steady around the late forty’s and low fifty’s on most rivers at the moment and they are surely going to rise slowly with little snow melt to come. Welcome rainfall is keeping our systems rising and falling weekly, with this fluctuation in water heights we are seeing fresh runs of salmon shooting past us on their way up the systems. Many a fish is being caught with plenty of sea lice attached to them.
We are coming in to one of my favourite months of the year, June. This is when the rivers are looking fantastic with all the new greenery and flowers are in full splendour. There is a good chance you will hook into something special this month as we see the arrival of the summer salmon normally in the 12-14lb class, including a few silver monsters still kicking around. This in the month when the netting stations normally have their biggest fish of the year. So when your line takes off this month I hope you manage a PB for yourself.
Flies I would recommend for June are Arndilly & Gold, Junction Gunn, Park Shrimp and the Beauly Gunn, with a close eye on higher water levels you might still need to stay on copper tubes and I would be trying a Silver Willie Gunn, Fire Gunn and one of the most outstanding pattern that catches a very high percentage of fish is the Cascade Dog Conehead. – Find Flies.
If you have low clear water you must think about changing down to the smaller sizes on the Executioner, Stincher Stoat, Silver Stoats Tail and of course the plain old Willie Gunn. Not forgetting the must have two flies that will, as soon as the water reaches the fifty degrees plus mark they will take off with a bang, the Cohn’s Sunray for those brighter days and the Sunray Shadow – Find Flies.
It might be a month of quality rather than quantity
Enjoy your fishing in the month of June
