Spring Patterns To Try

Caledonia Fly CompanyWhy does a non-feeding salmon take an artificial fly? No one truly knows, but the patterns from our specialists have worked their magic on waters in Scotland in Spring. We have chosen the three top flies that were consistently mentioned by our experts. They can fish in all conditions and river heights, just refine the size of the fly to be in with a chance of a springer.

1: Willie Gunn

Screen Shot 2015-01-20 at 14.35.43The Willie Gun Tube can be fished with confidence in almost every situation, just change the size to suit the water conditions. Gary Scott recommends a 2 1/2″ Willie Gunn at Spring time on the Tay. Gordon Pollack Dunkeld Fishing recommends a sparsely dressed Willie Gunn. David Cargill recommends a gold bodied Willie Gunn with a little tinsel flash in the tail. Malcolm Anderson Caledonia Fly Company says “The addition of the Gold body improves giving a distinctive kick to this drab looking fly. It Salmon gold Partridge Patriot double works very well in all water condition and is the bling version of the outstanding Willie Gunn.”

Caledonia Fly Company2: Cascade – Ally Gowans Cascade in the space of little more than a decade has established itself as one of the most used of all salmon flies in the UK and an excellent fly for spring Andy Gunn, Newtyle beat recommends a holographic cascade and Auro Cascade for the Tay. This Salmon double is probably the most used and successful of all of the Ally’s Shrimp patterns. It fishes well in all heights and conditions of all of the rivers. Its is arguably the most popular. It is fished throughout the season but comes into its own when the water starts to rise from the cold spring temperatures.

Caledonia Fly Company3: Posh Tosh – A fly that stands the test of time. The vibrant colours of a heavily dressed Posh Tosh work well in peaty/whisky coloured water and is an excellent fly in spring. The two tone wing and fluorescent throat hackle of artic fox flowing over the top and bottom of the brightest of mirage body’s is a true stunner in the water.  It comes in a single, double, treble, Copper, Conehead and Aluminums tubes to suit all water conditions, from 2 1/2 “ copper tubes to a size 16 treble.

Vision 110 with a single treble. X120 from the middle of April onwards for running fish on the Tay. Black Zebra Toby 28g.

Thank you to the following for their recommendations: Simon Furniss & Gordon Pollack – Dunkeld Fishing. Gary Scott World Champion Spey Caster recommend Cascade, Posh Tosh, Willie Gunn

Andy Gunn Newtyle beat & David Cargill – recommend Holographic Cascade, Aura Cascade, Gold Bodied Willie Gunn, Posh Tosh and the Monkey fly.
