With the grilse and summer salmon season well on the go the flashy Bobby Dazzler is a true all-round pattern. Small shrimp-like patterns Shadow Shrimp and the Black or Yellow Boar are also well worth a swim this summer.
Remember the higher the water temperatures and lower the river levels fish are going to be a bit of a devil and frustrating to get them to take a fly. Move down to a very small (tiny) fly or if patience fails – take the bull by the horns and cast a Sunray Shadow, giving it extra movement as it swings across in front of their paths. Remember first run down – a small pattern, then change to a Sunray and continue this pattern from pool to pool.
Skinny Sunray Shadow’s – on hover lines stripped across the deep pools or fast streams will sure to get a reaction on even the sluggish of fish. I use a hover as it makes less surface movement and disturbance when working the fly. Don’t fish too light a leader or you will get smashed on the take.
Small and very small patterns – are my favourite at this time of year. Size 14 doubles and size 16 trebles, 4mm to 8mm tube flies can be deadly. The only thing you need is the confidence to try small flies. Hooks will be out of sight and only with a tiny piece of skin you must be gentle playing them or your hook will tear out.
