Northumbrian Water are national winners at Game Fishing Championships

Fly fishermen from Northumbrian Water won the Water Industry Game Fishing Championships (WIGFiC) for the first time. (Sat 5 May).

The six-man team caught 13 rainbow trout – almost twice as many fish as any other team in the competition – which weighed 30lb 11oz, to earn 57 points and take the coveted team trophy.

And two of the team also took first and fourth individual places in the competition fished by almost 100 anglers at Pitsford reservoir near Northampton.

Peter Pattinson, from Newcastle, was the individual champion catching six fish weighing 12lb 9oz and Scott Everett, from Burnopfield near Gateshead, was fourth with four fish weighing 8lb 15oz.

Prizes from event supporter, world famous Northumberland tackle company Hardy Greys, were presented by Dr David Smoker, business development director for main sponsor Saint Gobain Pipelines. The other Northumbrian Water team mates were Andrew Scott, from St John’s Chapel, Weardale; Brian Lillie from Gosforth; Don Coe from Consett and Alistair Baker from Stanley, both County Durham.

Team captain, Alistair Baker, said: “In the last ten years we have been placed second three times, third three times and fourth once so finally it is tremendous to have won outright. It was a brilliant team effort of which we are very proud.

“It is great to be representing Northumbrian Water which operates the biggest and most successful trout fishing business in Europe and this year to also have the leading fly fishing team in the industry as well.”

The annual competition is open to teams from all of the ten major water companies in England and Wales, the Environment Agency regions and its head office, the Association of Rivers Trusts and British Waterways and has been staged at fisheries throughout both countries for more than 30 years.

This year’s event, hosted by Anglian Water, was fished in very cold and extremely windy challenging conditions and more than half the field failed to catch. The average catch for the competition worked out at less than one fish per angler. The Northumbrian Water team’s total catch of 13 fish was almost twice as many fish as any other team in the competition.
