The Tontine Hotel – a Great Catch!

Apr 30, 2012 | Where To Fish

Are you looking for an action packed fishing break? If so, the Tontine Hotel with its enviable location beside the River Tweed in Peebles is a great catch.
The Tweed is world-renowned for its salmon fishing, and deservedly so, but the sea trout, wild brown trout and grayling found in this Borders gem are just as worthy of attention. What this means for any visiting fly-fisher is a stunning river which can be fished the year-round.

On hand to provide instruction, guiding and information is Hardy Academy member and regular Trout & Salmon contributor Finlay Wilson. He can advise on the best options depending on conditions/time of year and has access to fishing on the whole of the Tweed system. Fishing can also be arranged on three miles of private water a short drive from the hotel.

And after an exhilarating day in the great outdoors you can recharge your batteries and enjoy the excellent food, friendly well stocked bar, roaring fires and comfortable en-suite rooms. With the fishing expertise, drying room, secure storage for rods and equipment as well as private parking, the Tontine provides everything a fisherman could want.

All that remains is for you to decide when to come fishing.

The trout and sea trout season runs from April to the end of September. Some very large wild trout are present in the Tweed with fish in the 3-4lb bracket caught each year, and the chance of 5lb plus specimens. The best time for the bigger wild trout can be early season on the dry fly when good hatches of March Browns and Large Dark Olives can be expected whilst in the middle of summer early morning or evening fishing can be more productive. For novice anglers and beginners, there is no shortage of more modest-sized and accommodating trout.

As for the sea trout, fish into double figures (10lb plus) run the river each year.

The salmon season runs from mid-February to the end of November, the prime time being September onwards. However, catches of spring salmon are on the up and the summer grilse run can provide fantastic sport.

World-class grayling fishing, almost always available but particularly popular in the depths of winter, and you can enjoy a fishing break whatever the month.

The Tontine is offering a special Bed & Breakfast deal from £80 per room per night (subject to availability) for 2 people sharing a standard twin or double room during the months of May, June & July 2012.
