Spring has arrived early on Tweed and with the warmer days our thoughts turn to planning our fishing for the season ahead. This year, why not bring the whole family including the dog and make a real holiday of it!
Crabtree & Crabtree offer handpicked holiday homes throughout the Tweed Valley many of which are just a decent roll cast from the river. Whilst the properties are well set up for fishing parties often with dedicated rod and drying rooms, they equally provide a luxurious base for non-fishing member of the party. Dogs are welcome at most properties and to help make your stay hassle-free, Crabtree and Crabtree can arrange cooks, daily housekeeping and wine and food delivery. Their homemade meal delivery service is particularly popular; after a hard day on the river all you need to do is turn the oven on!
For non-fishing members of the party Crabtree and Crabtree can arrange cookery classes at your holiday home, private demos by local artisanal food producers (with tastings of course), visits to the famous Border’s cashmere mills or private classes by local artists including ‘Young Picasso’s’ which is guaranteed to keep the kids amused. The more active can enjoy a gallop along the sandy beaches of Holy Island, have a go at kite-surfing at Beadnell Bay, or become immersed in the rich and often bloody history of the region with a visit to the area’s dramatic castles, evocative ruined abbeys or elegant country houses. The opportunities are endless!
One of their most popular properties is The Boathouse set in an idyllic spot on the river above Norham Bridge. The house is let with or without the fishing which extends to about 1,000 yards of single bank and like most Bottom Tweed beats, the beat excels in low water conditions. The ‘beach’ area in front of the house provides a safe spot to introduce children to the joys of fishing. A trout rod, reel and line are provided at the house and with local trout fishing permits costing just £5 a day it is well worth a try to catch fresh trout for supper. The Boathouse is an ideal base for fishing parties wishing to explore other beats and is within easy driving distance of prime lower and middle Tweed beats as well as the Till and Whiteadder.
